We all have those films that we have always wanted to sit down and watch with partners, or on days off on your own. But for some reason we can never commit to watching them. Whether you think it may not live up to expectations, or you won't be able to get 'that time back'. Well honestly are you ever gonna get any time back? Or the time you spent not watching the film and you just sit around staring at the walls thinking of chores to do.
We all do it, but right now we all have nothing better to do, its as simple as that. Stick that Tarantino film on, or that dusty Prisoners DVD in!
This is gonna be a list of 5 films that are perfect for those slow, lethargic lockdown days, I have watched all these films during lockdown and I don't regret anything, and don't wish for 'that time back' at all!
I will try and avoid spoilers as much as possible!
1. Reservoir Dogs, Quentin Tarantino, 1992
Tarantinos 1992 raw directoral debut is everything you want in a Tarantino film. The fact he got everything spot on the first time round is incredible. The non-linear storyline, the long dialogue scenes, one of which kicks off the film in a dusty American Diner. What I love about this film, is something I look for in every film, the music. K-Billy's Super Sounds of the 70's sets the soundtrack of Reservoir Dogs throughout, and a few of the tracks are synonymous with this film. A huge plus for the movie is the length of it. Many people see the length of a QT film and decide against it right away. Trust me, this is one of the best hour and a half of cinema I have ever watched. You will have to look hard to find better movies than a Quentin Tarantino movie, in my humble opinion.
2. Gone Girl, David Fincher, 2014
The twisted (storyline and twists alike) psychological thriller from David Fincher manages to grab every bit of suspense, drama, shock and every other emotion someone can have when their wife goes missing, and sprinkles it all over the film. The crisp clean writing of the title on screen translates into the sharp cinematography early on in the film, and carries on throughout. This is a masterpiece that will grab you right away. Have your dinner, turn the lights off and put Gone Girl on, you won't regret it.
3. Nightcrawler, Dan Gilroy, 2014
There will be a common theme running through this blog. My admiration of Jake Gyllenhall. I genuinely don't think he has had a bad performance. Team him up with the right director, and douse him in some Neo-noir thriller and you have my perfect film. What a brilliant weirdo Jake plays, in Enemy, Prisoners, Donnie Darko, End of Watch, his thousand yard stare, or internal monologue without even saying anything captivates me. This makes Nightcrawler a brilliant film, dark, sleazy, suspenseful themes culminate in a good thriller ending.
4. Inside Out, Walt Disney Productions, 2015
I am a big sucker for heart warming Disney films, that have a lot of easy watching gags. I like a silly film sometimes, and this one has everything. Inside Out is a great film for the kids, but adults can take a lot from it too. The film follows Riley, an 11 year old girl who moves to San Francisco, and it looks at how growing up can affect you, and your memories. Its has lovely childhood themes, and its definitely a film that we can all relate to. On a side note, Amy Poehler is the perfect choice for her role as Joy. It really is a nice, heartwarming, lovely film that, as always with Disney, still manages to tug at your heartstrings. A great film for families during lockdown, couldn't recommend it more.
5. The Shining, Stanley Kubrick, 1980
Dark, disturbing, iconic, a classic that may go out of everyones head. "Yeah I will watch that one day" makes it perfect for this list. Its not considered one of the best horror films of all time for no reason. Jack Nicholson was born to play this crazed role. Long dialogue, shocking, sharp music, and incredible cinematography, set in a haunted hotel in the middle of a beautiful mountainous setting. Its a disturbingly beautiful piece of cinema, that yes, does make you jump. However, you need to watch this film before you die, so why not now!
Admittedly, Inside Out looks very odd in this list, but I have tried to take films that I have watched during lockdown, and took into account different living scenarios. You can watch Inside Out with the kids, put them to bed and then stick the Shining on! Honestly there's no reason you cant watch these films during lockdown. Let me know your thoughts when you have watched them! Enjoy and stay safe!
